The Northern Neck Master Naturalists invites all members and the public to its first 2019 meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019 at 1:15 pm in the Northumberland Public Library, 7204 Northumberland Hwy, Heathsville. The program is free and open to all.
The presentation will be about Virginia’s Natural Area Preserves with special focus on the four preserves we have in the Northern Neck. Virginia has 63 Natural Area Preserves all of which were created and are protected because they contain some of the rarest natural communities and unique species habitats in North America. The Preserve system is managed by the Natural Heritage Division of the Virginia Dept. of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and began in the late 1980’s.
Our Presenter will be Zack Bradford, the DCR Preserve Steward for the Chesapeake region, who is a botanist with a special interest is orchids and other rare plants in the region. He is responsible for the oversight and management of the eight Preserves in the Middle and Northern Neck regions.
We invite all members and the public to attend the program and learn about this year’s Virginia Master Naturalist Program plans, as well as learn about the Natural Area Preserves in Virginia. For questions contact Kevin Howe at (571) 232-4592.
